Sarah Shucksmith (Geography 2006) founded Sarah Junior School in the Kibera slum during her gap year. Now they’re building a new school.
The school provides educational, social and spiritual support to children and young people in one of the largest and poorest slums in Kenya. Now the charity has purchased a plot of land in the slum and is building a brand new school due to open early 2013.
The charity operates on the principle that Western charities should act in an enabling, not prescriptive, manner. The school is run and managed by Kenyan volunteers and all teachers and other personnel employed are local residents in Kibera.
Sarah (now Sarah Vohya) and her husband made a trip to Cambridge over the holiday, meeting up with Fellow Bhaskar Vira.
