Profile

Oyster reefs are among the most threatened marine habitats, with an estimated 85% decline globally over the past two centuries. The restoration need is evident, but how much restoration should we aim to achieve? Together with an expert panel of scientists and colleagues at The Nature Conservancy, I am working to create a framework for setting oyster restoration goals at a large (bay wide) scale. Our goal setting project relies on us collecting information on the historic and current status of oysters in US bays and when possible we are assessing the extent of loss. In order to set appropriate restoration goals, we are generating estimates of the ecosystem services such as denitrification, filtration and fisheries production that can be attributed to healthy oyster habitat at a large scale.
My current research is funded by The Nature Conservancy.
