Academic Prizes

All awards carry a value of £100 unless otherwise stated. At the end of the academic year, the Tutorial Committee identifies undergraduates meeting the criteria and awards them directly.

These prizes are awarded without restriction of subject.

Arts

These prizes are awarded to students studying Arts subjects.

  • Progress shown in work deserving special recognition
Commemorating the late R N Walters, Tutor at Fitzwilliam House and Senior Tutor at Fitzwilliam College 1966-67.

Natural Sciences

William French Prize
  • Awarded to encourage, rather than for achievement
  • Chemistry and Plant Sciences students eligible
  • Physics and Mechanics students (where this is a focus) ineligible
Gift made in 1939 by William French (Natural Sciences, 1887-90).
Landy Prize for Progress
  • Most meritorious progress in Mathematics Part 1B
Established 2004 by a gift from Mr Barry Landy, a life Fellow of Fitzwilliam, to mark 31 years teaching Natural Sciences Part 1B Mathematics.

Theology

Gibson Prizes
  • Show distinction in New Testament Greek
Gifts between 1889-96 by Dr Margaret D Gibson, Oriental and New Testament Scholar, and widow of Mr J Y Gibson (1826-86) who was a translator of Spanish.

History

Bequeathed by Mrs E W Ilsley in 1973, in memory of her son Major P E Ilsley (History, 1939-41), who served in the Army with distinction for 5 years, before returning to complete his degree. He died in 1948 at 26.
