Facilities

What's in my room?

All Fitzwilliam rooms contain:

• Bed with mattress and pillow and mattress protector
• Desk
• Desk Chair
• Wardrobe
• Bookcase
• Radiator
• Waste bin
• Curtains/blinds

A complete inventory for each specific room will be supplied when a student first signs for the keys to a room.  Linen and duvets are available for hire from the Fitzwilliam linen hire service.

Bathroom/Washing Facilities - The provision of shower, wash basin or toilet depends on the category of room.  When facilities are not provided in the room, they are available on a shared basis with the other rooms in the staircase/house.

Kitchen

College accommodation features communal kitchens, which are also knows as 'gyp' rooms, where residents can cook their own food.

Most kitchens contain the following equipment

  • Hob
  • Microwave
  • Oven
  • Refrigerator (no freezer)
  • Sink
  • Kettle
  • Toaster

Laundry

The Laundry Room for the main College site is located at the bottom of F staircase.  There are also laundry facilities in Neale House on Huntingdon Road, at the Sports Ground in Oxford Road and at Glisson Road.  Tokens to operate the machines (washing machines and dryers) can be obtained from the Porters Lodge or the Buttery.

Iron and Ironing tables are provided for use in the Laundry rooms.

Telephones

Rooms on the main college site are all connected to the College telephone network.  Telephone calls inside college are free, but to call outside lines requires a deposit (paid at the Porters Lodge).  Call costs are added to your following term's bill.  Tarifs can be checked with the Lodge staff.

College Houses do not have telephone connections.  Students use their own mobile phone.

Internet

All rooms have internet access via the College Network Connection service.

Televisions

If you want to bring a TV, you must buy a licence.  The College does not hold a general one.  The TV Licensing Authority knows you are coming, so it's not worth taking a chance.  Both the JCR (Junior Common Room) and the MCR (middle Common Room) have big TVs with digital satellite, Sky Sports etc.

Storage during the holidays

An Undergraduate student living on the main college site will have to vacate their room and remove all of their possessions at the end of each term.

Graduate students and those Undergraduates living in College houses, are able to stay during the Christmas and Easter vacation and can leave all possessions in their room if they go home.

For Overseas and EU students only, there is some limited storage available for the vacation period.
