Saatchi’s The Other Art Fair
Alumna J Poon (History of Art 2012), who works under the artistic name Phett Waivv, has been selected to present at the 2018 Saatchi The Other Art Fair in London.
Earlier this year Phett Waivv, a multimedia artist and art director, submitted her artwork to a panel of curators from Saatchi Art, and was chosen from 1000 other practitioners to form part of this select show, which is taking place 4-7 October 2018.
Started seven years ago, The Other Art Fair was born from a realisation of the disparity between a London audience eager to discover the next big thing and talented artists struggling to gain recognition. Previous editions have been hailed as the 'future of the Young British Artists (YBA) generation' and the event is rapidly gaining the critical acclaim and prestige that Frieze London and the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition hold.
In addition, Phett Waivv’s essay work will be published in the artist anthology by the collective isthisit as part of the group exhibition Terms and Conditions May Apply, which concerns surveillance, the monitoring and mediation of online/offline lives by corporations and government bodies accompanied by the monetising of one's personal and private data.
Based on her undergraduate thesis The Art of Warring Networks, the essay takes Sun Tzu's treatise as a stimulus and documents the rise of 'post-internet' culture viewed through the lens of aesthetic theory. It proposes the use of the networked-self as defence against the corporations that host them. It features a series of original interviews with contemporary practitioners. The show runs until 18 August at the Annka Kultys Gallery in London.
Dr Anna Gannon, J's Director of Studies at College, said: "I have been keeping in touch with her since her graduation. I was delighted with the news, and congratulated her warmly on this impressive achievement."
