Faith at Fitz
Fitzwilliam is a home to people of all faiths and none. All major world faiths are represented in our college community and there is a great range of student societies to offer support and fellowship to those following a specific path. The diversity of the wider Cambridge community means that all faiths are practiced across the city, and some of the spaces dedicated to faith are world-famous.
The College Chapel
The Chapel was built for the worship of God, in a time when Christianity was the norm in the city and university. In today’s multi-faith, multi-cultural society, all members of the College, whatever their religious beliefs, are welcome to use the Chapel for quiet and reflection, or to attend Chapel services and events. It is not necessary to be a member of any branch of Christianity, or any other religion, to attend a service or event in the Chapel.
The College Chapel is located at the heart of the college and is a space where everyone is welcome for their own quiet contemplation or prayer. The Chapel is especially set aside for quiet reflection between 1-2pm and 5-6pm and is also quiet at other times.
Services of Christian worship take place in the Chapel on term-time Sundays from 9:30am and 6:30pm. The Sunday evening service features the College choir. All college members are welcome to attend chapel services.
MacCormac Jamieson Prichard designed the Chapel to suggest a floating ship, the hull of which is revealed in American white oak panelling through the fine white concrete. The Chapel won a 1992 Civic Trust Award, the 1993 Carpenters’ Award and the 1993 David Urwin Award for Best New Building.
The Chaplain
The College Chaplain is Rev'd Graham Stevenson.
In addition to welcoming people to Chapel services, Graham is keen to offer friendly support to all College members, regardless of faith, and to work with other pastoral care providers in College to help those facing particular difficulties.
Graham is in College on weekdays and in Chapel at services on Sunday. Please feel free to drop in to his study, K11b, or phone or email to arrange a time to meet up. For details of services and activities, please use this term card.
Graham originally trained with TeachFirst as a Science teacher after reading Biochemistry at Oxford. Teaching was followed by a year living in Tunisia and then ordination training at St Mellitus College. Graham extended his training with an MA in Biblical Studies at King's College London before going on to his curacy leading a church in Hackney which served a diverse and deprived parish.
