Postgraduate scholarships and prizes

The College has competitive scholarships to help fund your course. There are also awards for outstanding academic achievement and impressive contributions to the broader life of the College. This is made possible through the generosity of alumni and other donors.


Competitive scholarships

Fitzwilliam College offers two fully-funded PhD Studentships and two fully-funded Masters Studentships, as well as several part-cost Scholarships. Academic merit is the main criteria for all scholarships, other criteria may apply to individual awards. Fitzwilliam welcomes applications from all outstanding students, and unless specifically stated this is regardless of nationality.

    Scholarships for Masters degrees

    Value: One award - Fully-funded (fees and maintenance)

    Eligibility:

    • All full-time one year Masters courses are eligible, with the exception of MBA, MFin and PGCE
    • All nationalities and fee status
    • There are specific subject area criteria for this Studentship.  More information.
    • Deadline for studentship application - 3 December 2019 (24:00 hours)
    • Applicants must also apply for a place on their chosen course by 3 December 2019  and tick the box for inclusion in the funding competitions on their application.  Some courses have funding deadlines later than 3 December.  To be eligible for Lee Kuan Yew  studentships the earlier deadlines must be met.
    • Applicants may apply to any of the University's colleges as their first choice college. The awardee will be required to transfer college membership to Fitzwilliam College before the start of their course.

    Apply online before 3 December for 2020 entry. Shortlisted candidates will be notified in February with interviews to be held (in person, or via Skype) in early March.

    • To complete the application you will also need to upload a PDF copy of your University application form

    Value: One award - Fully-funded (fees and maintenance)

    Eligibility:

    • All full-time one year Masters courses are eligible, with the exception of MBA, MFin and PGCE
    • All nationalities and fee status
    • Studentship application deadline is 29 February 2020. 
    • Applicants may apply for the studentship before they have an offer from the University. However...
      • Applicants must have a conditional offer from the University by 15 March (to meet this criteria, we recommend that the University application is submitted by 3 December)
      • Applicants must have College membership with Fitzwilliam by 15 March. It is not possible to transfer Colleges in order to be eligible for this Studentship, but all those who name Fitzwilliam as their first choice, or who are allocated via 2nd choice or random allocation, will be eligible.

    Apply online Deadline 29 February 2020. Interviews will be late April, results available by the end of May.

    • To complete the application you will also need to upload a PDF copy of your University application form

    Value: Up to five awards at £10,000 each

    Eligibility:

    • Application for the Charlton Studentship is via the Fitzwilliam Masters Studentship competition and all the same conditions apply.

    Value: Three awards of £4,000 each (occasionaly 4 awards of £3,000 each)

    Eligibility

    • All full-time, one year Masters courses that are offered by the Department of Land Economy are eligible.
    • One of the Studentships will be prioritised for a Fitzwilliam undergraduate student who is applying for MPhil in Cambridge.
    • All nationalities and fee status
    • Studentship application deadline is 31 March 2020. 
      • Applicants must have an offer of a place on the course by the deadline (to meet this criteria, we recommend that the University application is submitted by 3 December)
      • Applicants must have College membership with Fitzwilliam by the deadline.
    • It is not possible to transfer Colleges in order to be eligible for this Studentship, but all those who name Fitzwilliam as their first choice, or who are allocated via 2nd choice or random allocation, will be eligible

    Value: One award of £1,250

    Eligibility

    • All full-time, one year Masters courses that are offered by the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages are eligible.
    • All nationalities and fee status
    • Scholarship application deadline is 31 March 2020. 
      • Applicants must have an offer of a place on the course by the deadline (to meet this criteria, we recommend that the University application is submitted by 3 December
      • Applicants must have College membership with Fitzwilliam by the deadline.
    • It is not possible to transfer Colleges in order to be eligible for this Studentship, but all those who name Fitzwilliam as their first choice, or who are allocated via 2nd choice or random allocation, will be eligible

    Apply online Deadline 31 March 2020.  Interviews are not normally held for this studentship. Results available early June

    Value: £100 each

    Details: All students starting the LLM or MCL course at Fitzwilliam receive a Law Book grant in the form of book tokens.

    Application: No application is necessary.

    Scholarships for PhD

    Value: One award - Fully-funded (fees and maintenance). 3.5 years.

    Eligibility:

    • All full-time PhD courses are eligible,
    • All nationalities and fee status
    • Specific subject area criteria apply for this Studentship  -  the research area for the PhD must explore a topic integrally related to the study of public policy
    • Deadline for studentship application - 3 December 2019 (24:00 hours)
      • Applicants must also apply for a place on their chosen course by 3 December 2019  and tick the box for inclusion in the funding competitions on their application.  Some courses have funding deadlines later than 3 December.  To be eligible for the Stan Gold studentship the earlier deadlines must be met.
    • Applicants may apply to any of the University's colleges as their first choice college. The awardee will be required to transfer college membership to Fitzwilliam College before the start of their course.

    Eligibility:

    • All nationalities and fee status

    Value: £3,500/year

    Eligibility:

    • Applicants must be Home fee status from a British university
    • PhD (including PhD probationary) students in years 1-3 years
    • Physical or Biological Sciences, Engineering and Mathematics subjects

    Apply online before 13 June. Results available first week of July.  

    Value: One award of  £1,460 - awarded for one year

    This scholarship may not be used towards the financial undertaking required for admission to the course 

    Eligibility

    • All full-time PhD courses are eligible.  Arts students may be preferred.
    • All nationalities and fee status

    Apply online. Deadline is 31 August at 24:00 hours.  The results will be available in mid-November. 

    One application applies for both College Graduate and ED Davies at the same time. Students may re-apply each year they are eligible

    Value: Three awards of £1,460 - awarded for one year

    This scholarship may not be used towards the financial undertaking required for admission to the course

    Eligibility

    • All full-time PhD courses are eligible. 
    • All nationalities and fee status

    Apply online. Deadline is 31 August at 24:00 hours.  The results will be available in mid-November. 

    One application applies for both College Graduate and ED Davies at the same time. Students may re-apply each year they are eligible

    Scholarships for students studying Theology, or a related topic, or expecting to take holy orders in a Christian church

    Value: One award of £1,165 - awarded for one year

    This scholarship may not be used towards the financial undertaking required for admission to the course.

    Eligiblity:

    • Applicant should be intending to work towards a doctorate in New Testament Studies
    • Students naming Fitzwilliam as first choice are preferred but not exclusively

    • One application will cover Gibson, Hirst Player and Shipley scholarships.  Students may re-apply each year they are eligible

    Value: One or two awards of up to £2,330 (maximum) - awarded for one year

    This scholarship may not be used towards the financial undertaking required for admission to the course.

    Eligibility

    • Intention to take Holy Orders in a Christian Church preferred.
    • Students needing assistance with fees, who would otherwise be unable to study at Cambridge

    Value: One award of £1,460 - awarded for one year

    This scholarship may not be used towards the financial undertaking required for admission to the course.

    Eligibility

    • Applicant should be undertaking / intending to undertake research at the Faculty of Divinity.  
    • Exceptionally, research on a theological topic in another faculty also accepted

    Prizes for academic excellence

    Students achieving a distinction in their Masters degree receive the Graduate Tutors prize to the value of £175. PhD students reaching a standard of academic excellence receive a College Senior Scholarships, to the value of £350. No application is necessary for these awards.

    Other prizes

    At the end of the academic year, the Tutorial Committee identifies undergraduates or graduate students meeting the criteria and awards other prizes accordingly. All awards carry a value of £100 unless otherwise stated.
