The Director of Music
Ms Catherine Groom (music@fitz.cam.ac.uk) is Director of Music and a Bye-Fellow of the College. She facilitates music-making by and for students in all forms, composing, arranging and coaching for the student body, curating and administrating concerts, directing the Chapel Choir, producing for the Fitzwilliam Chamber Opera and overseeing all things musical from the sheet music collection to the instruments. She also supervises undergraduates on the Music Tripos. Cat is a freelance player of medieval/Gothic/triple/lever/electro harps and of recorders, a musical director, a singer and a writer on music, and has worked as such for institutions ranging from the Royal Shakespeare Company to the BBC. She has particular interests in medieval liturgical drama, in women in liturgical music, in plucked continuo in early baroque opera, in contemporary theatrical scoring and in cross-cultural improvisatory practice both medieval and contemporary.
Past Directors of Music
Fitzwilliam College appointed its first dedicated Director of Music in 1994 - Jonathan Sanders. He was succeeded by Andrew Lovett, Peter Tregear, Michael Downes, Francis Knights, and Katharine Parton.
