APPLICATIONS FOR THIS SCHEME HAVE NOW CLOSED
The JCR Shadowing Scheme is an annual event for Year 12 students attending a state school or college in one of our Link Areas of Cheshire, Cumbria, and Hammersmith and Fulham. This year the scheme will be taking place between 20 to 23 November 2019.
The Fitzwilliam College JCR Shadowing Scheme offers state-educated students the opportunity to stay in Cambridge and go to lectures, classes, and social activities with a current Fitzwilliam student to see what student life at Cambridge is really like (hint: it’s a lot of fun!). It's a fantastic opportunity to get a taste of what it would be like to study at a top university, experiencing typical undergraduate teaching at the University of Cambridge. You will be provided with accommodation and meals in Fitzwilliam College for the duration of the scheme. The entire scheme is free of charge and we will reimburse reasonable travel costs.
The itinerary for the scheme will be released to the selected applicants closer to the event, but the scheme will roughly involve the following:
Wednesday 20 Arrive late afternoon and meet the other students and mentors. Have a tour of the College and settle into rooms.
Thursday 21 and Friday 22 Attend lectures, supervisions, and classes with the mentors. There will be the chance to explore the city and other colleges, and the mentors will arrange evening entertainment.
Saturday 23 Personal statements workshop and applying to Cambridge presentation. Depart late morning.
Unlike in previous years, this year the selected applicants will not be assigned a specific Fitzwilliam student as their mentor. Instead there will be a group of mentors studying a range of subjects and students can choose which lectures and classes to attend. This means that you can sample a range of subjects and maybe even go to a lecture on a subject you’ve never heard of!
We encourage applications from all high-achieving students who are starting Year 12 in September 2019 at a state-maintained school in Cheshire, Cumbria, or Hammersmith or Fulham. We aim to select applicants with the academic potential to apply to top universities, but who come from backgrounds that are currently underrepresented in Cambridge and other highly selective institutions. For this reason, applicants who live in low-participation areas or have ever been in the care of a local authority will be prioritised, but neither is compulsory for a successful application.
If you’d like to apply to the 2019 Fitzwilliam College Shadowing Scheme, please complete the online form by 6 October. Please not that you will have to provide details for a parent/guardian and a teacher, who will both be contacted and asked to complete additional forms. Without completed forms from both a parent/guardian and a teacher, a student’s application will not be considered.
Please direct any queries to email@example.com.
Last year's scheme took place from 15-17 November. The students had the opportunity to attend lectures, student-led activities, and an advice session on applying to Cambridge with a personal statements workshop. Best of luck with your applications this year!
