I think I’ve had a pretty hectic six months at Fitz! So far I’ve spent four weeks in our link areas of Cheshire and Cumbria, visiting schools and colleges to speak to from Year 7 to Year 13 about Cambridge and deliver talks aimed at raising their aspirations. Going out to visit schools is definitely my favourite part of the job- I really love meeting such a huge range of students! I’m hoping to do another two weeks away next term to try and visit the schools I couldn’t make it to in my earlier trips!

Back in Fitzwilliam, I’ve been hosting a number of incoming visits from schools and colleges in our closer link area of Hammersmith and Fulham, as well as some that have made the trek down from Cheshire and Cumbria! I’ve also been in contact with some Fitz alumni who now work at a school and have brought their students to see the college, and several current Fitz students have helped arrange for their old schools to come and visit. The next few months are absolutely packed with incoming visits so I’m enlisting the help of my student helpers to make sure that everything runs smoothly!

My biggest event so far has been the Fitzwilliam College JCR Shadowing Scheme, which I organised along with the JCR Target and Access Officer. Following the success of previous years, this November saw a number of Year 12s from state schools in Hammersmith and Fulham spend two nights in college as part of the scheme. The visiting students were assigned a current Fitz student as a mentor for three days and attended lectures, social activities, and even supervisions with them. All of the mentees really enjoyed experiencing teaching at the University and I’m looking forward to running the event again next year!
