Subject Taster Programmes 2023

Applications for these programmes are now closed. Our subject tasters for 2024 will be confirmed at the beginning of the year.

Want to discover more about subjects you could study at the University of Cambridge? Our annual exciting and interactive Subject Tasters are designed to provide potential applicants with a flavour of undergraduate study at Cambridge, and an opportunity to explore topics beyond what is covered within the school curriculum. Students who are in year 12 (England and Wales), S5 (Scotland), year 13 (Northern Ireland) or equivalent overseas are eligible to apply for all programmes. For the Student-led Arts And Humanities Taster Programme, students in year 11 (England and Wales), S4 (Scotland), year 12 (Northern Ireland) are also welcome to apply.

Each subject programme will consist of:

- Q&A sessions with current undergraduate students in your subject

- Super-curricular subject content delivered by members of Fitzwilliam College

- Exclusive access to lectures by college Fellows

- A chance to meet our Director of Studies and explore the subject of a lecture in more depth

- More information about applying to study at Cambridge and opportunities for questions

- An opportunity to visit Fitzwilliam College at the University of Cambridge for in-person follow up sessions this summer (subject to demand)

 

These events are free of charge and the online elements will be hosted on Zoom. Links will be sent out to attendees before the events. Please note that participants in small-group sessions will be encouraged to turn their video and audio on, and will therefore need to provide evidence of parent permission to take part in these sessions. Please note that new subjects may be added throughout the year and programmes are subject to change.

Booking for our 2024 taster programmes will open at the start of 2024. You can find examples of our past events below.

In the event of over subscription, places will be allocated according to widening participation criteria. Completing the registration form does not guarantee a place.

These sessions will provide an insight into the study of medicine at Cambridge University, through taster lectures, and discussions with current staff and students at the University. The full itinerary will include:

Thursday 6th of April - distribution of pre-recorded taster lecture by Dr Robert Abayasekara, Director of Pre-Clinical Studies for Medicine at Fitzwilliam College

Tuesday 11th April 6pm-7pm - discussion seminar with Dr Robert Abayasekara on pre-recorded lecture material

Wednesday 12th April 6pm-7pm - Small supervision style sessions with current medical students

Thursday 13th April 6pm-7pm - Session on applications for medicine and careers in medicine

Monday 7th August 2023 - in-person follow-up visit to Fitzwilliam College

BOOKINGS FOR THIS EVENT ARE NOW CLOSED.

This student-led taster programme includes virtual subject taster sessions from current undergraduate students in April, with an in-person follow up day in August. You will have the opportunity to hear from current undergraduates about aspects of their courses they have found particularly exciting, as well as their experiences studying at Cambridge. 

 

All virtual sessions will be held on Friday 14th April between 10am and 4pm, with the full timetable confirmed after applications close. There will be a general introductory talk, followed by a general Q&A with current students from a range of year groups. There will then be subject taster sessions in areas of human and physical Geography. The day will end with a talk on making a competitive application to study Geography to Cambridge.

Our History Taster Programme will include virtual sessions on Thursday 13th of April, with an in-person follow-up event in August 2023, date TBC. The sessions are as follows:

  • Super-curricular session with our Director of Studies for History, Dr Jean-Michel Johnston
  • Sources Seminar with members of History department from Fitzwilliam College
  • Student Q+A with current undergraduates studying History at Fitzwilliam
  • Session on Applications for History, History & Modern Languages, and History & Politics at Cambridge

Applications will close on the 29th of March at 6pm, and may be done through this online booking form.

BOOKINGS FOR THIS EVENT ARE NOW CLOSED.

These sessions will be an opportunity to hear about the English course at Cambridge University, and gain super-curricular insight into the subject.

Wednesday 12th April 2023 (between 1pm and 5pm)

These daytime virtual sessions will provide broad insight into English. Students will receive a virtual taster lecture by Dr Victoria Condie, Director of Studies for English at Fitzwilliam College, and will have the opportunity to discuss the lecture and ask Dr Condie questions. This will then be followed by a virtual Q&A with current English students at Fitzwilliam, and a talk containing detailed information on making a competitive application to study English at Cambridge.

Monday 21st of August 2023

A select number of students will be invited to a follow-up session at Fitzwilliam College in August, where they will have more opportunities for discussion about the course and applications, as well as for super-curricular exploration through lectures and seminars. Lunch will be provided for free and there will be tours of the College and Cambridge.

This student-led taster programme includes sessions from a range of different small arts & humanities subjects offered at Cambridge University, all linked by the detailed exploration of language, culture and history within the courses. You will have the opportunity to hear from current undergraduates about aspects of their courses they have found particularly exciting, as well as their experiences studying at Cambridge. There will be a series of taster sessions in April 2023, with a follow-up in-person visit to Fitzwilliam College in August 2023, date TBC.

 

All virtual sessions will be held on the 11th and 12th of April between 10am and 5pm; the full timetable will be confirmed after applications have closed. There will be a general introductory talk, followed by a general Q&A with current students from a range of subjects. On the 11th of April, there will then be subject taster sessions in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies; Archaeology; Classics; and Theology. The subject taster sessions on the 12th of April will be delivered by students studying Modern and Medieval Languages at Cambridge. The days will end with a talk on making a competitive application to Cambridge.

 

You may attend as many of the virtual subject-specific sessions as you would like, or as few - please simply indicate on the sign up form which you would be interested in attending. After the event, resources will be sent out to students to explore all of the subject included further, in advance of the follow-up in-person event in the summer. Please note that whilst the sessions are aimed at students in Year 12 (England and Wales), S5 (Scotland) or Year 13 (Northern Ireland), we also welcome applicants in the year below to apply. However, priority on the in-person day will be given to older students in the event of oversubscription.
