Future Fitz

At Fitz, we transform lives. We were founded to help the brightest minds reach their full potential, and for the last 155 years, that is exactly what we have done.

We are now raising funds to support Fitz’s evolution and to enable us to fulfil our objectives into the future.

Fitz aspires to lead the way in creating a modern setting in which ideas can spark. Our students are supported to fully immerse themselves in their studies and their passions.

Oxford Road

Old Pavilion

The Heart and Soul of Fitz

Almost one hundred years ago, the alumni of Fitz came together to raise sufficient funds to build the Oxford Road sports pavilion – a place we could call our own. Ever since, Oxford Road has been at the heart of the Fitz community. A place where brilliance is recognised, where difference is celebrated, where our community is nurtured.

Oxford Road is more than just buildings. It is where special memories are made and where lifelong friendships are forged. It has been home to famous wins and narrow losses, training sessions on cold winter days, and post-match celebrations in the warm spring sun.

Every Thursday afternoon when Cuppers was on, we’d all be there, without fail. Some of us on the pitch and everyone else (including the Master and Senior Tutor!) cheering on from the sidelines. Oxford Road was where we felt most proud to be ‘Fitz’ – where we came together. Maybe it wasn’t the most scenic sports ground in Cambridge, but it had its own special beauty! It was ours!

To mark the upcoming centenary, we will undertake a major upgrade.

Enhancing our facilities

Oxford Road

The £6 million renovation will introduce modern sporting facilities and upgrade the student accommodation next to the sports ground. We have to date secured a £1 million gift towards this goal.

The sports pavilion will be extended to incorporate four new fully accessible unisex changing facilities, meeting modern standards. We will relocate the club room from Red Cottage to the original sports pavilion room and Red Cottage will be fully renovated to offer student accommodation overlooking the sports field.

The project will also include a hard surface Multi Use Games Area for racquet and court sports and improvements to the drainage of the sports pitches. As part of our estate plan to consolidate sporting activity at Oxford Road, we will build a new squash court on the edge of the site. Finally, Fitz student accommodation on Oxford Road next to the sports ground will be redeveloped as part of the project.

The scheme will deliver high levels of sustainability, achieving another important step in decarbonising our estate.

A lasting legacy

Women's football

Our plans for Oxford Road will ensure that sport at Fitz, at all levels, will continue to flourish. A revitalised Oxford Road sports ground is important to the College’s goals. It will continue to play a key role in supporting wellbeing and in providing Fitz students with the opportunity to develop life skills beyond their academic studies as they go on to face real-world challenges.

Heading down to Oxford Road for a football training session or match after a morning of lectures is the best way to unwind. I've made so many friends outside my subject through sport at Fitz and I know that moments on the pitch here will stay with me for life. My time at the sportsground is such an important part of my time as a student here.
